These photographs were taken in a Transylvanian factory town. It was one of the most polluted places in Europe, when no less than 4,000 workers toiled to keep Sometra and Carbosin factories running at full capacity. They produced thousands of tons of heavy and non-ferrous metals, as well as carbon black. When I was there, only Sometra was still in operation. I used a medium format twin-lens reflex camera that my grandmother gave me for my 18th birthday. She had owned it for over fifty years.
