Sometra (2006)

These photographs were taken in a factory town in Transylvania. It was one of the most polluted places in Europe, where no less than 4,000 workers toiled to keep Sometra and Carbosin factories running at full capacity to produce thousands of tons of heavy or non-ferrous metal and carbon black. When I was there, only Sometra was still in operation. I used a medium format twin lens reflex camera that my grandmother gave me for my 18th birthday. She had owned it for over fifty years.
